Philip Treacy

Design Director of the g Hotel

Philip Treacy was born on May 26, 1967, the second youngest of eight children to a baker and housewife in the small Galway village of Ahascragh in Ireland, just 70km from Galway City - the 'cultural heart of Ireland'. In 1985 he studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin before being awarded a scholarship to London's Royal College of Art, where he specialised in hat design.  Philip fashioned his first efforts from bits and pieces picked up in local flea markets and started to work with established designers such as Rifat Ozbek, John Galliano and Victor Edelstein. His graduation show in 1991 caused a fashion sensation.

In 1991 the young designer established his own company, Philip Treacy Ltd, and started his collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. He has designed hats for haute couture houses such as Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Helmut Lang, Thierry Mugler, Anna Molinari and Versace.

In 1993 Philip Treacy presented the first of his annual catwalk shows at London Fashion Week with Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Stella Tennant all gracing the catwalk.  He went on to win the title of accessory designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards in 1991, 1992 and 1993, and then again in 1996 and 1997. In 2000 he became the first milliner to have his own couture show during Paris Fashion Week. SEE MORE BELOW

Today, Treacy's work has moved beyond the bounds of his stunning headwear, earning itself display space at both London's V&A and the Met in New York. Philip has also designed hats for various films, including the Harry Potter films and the hat Sarah Jessica Parker wore for the première of the film Sex and the City. He has also designed hats worn by Lady Gaga. One of his notable designs for her was created with Malinda Damgaard, a telephone-shaped headpiece with removable handset, worn for her appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in 2010.

Philip Treacy was Design Director of the g hotel which opened in November 2005. He designed the hotel with the sea in mind as Galway city always reminded him of visiting the seaside with his family.

In 2011, thirty six hats designed by Treacy were worn at the Royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on 29th April and in 2012 he held his first runway show in 12 years during London Fashion Week in September 2012. It was opened by Lady Gaga in her inimitable show stopping style.

Most recently Philip Treacy by Kevin Davies was published providing a unique, behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the world's most famous and influential milliners. Philip Treacy allowed a single photographer, his friend Kevin Davies, personal access to his life, studio and working method for the past 20 years. The result is a wonderful exploration into the world of a true craftsman, designer to the stars and creative magician.
